Frequently Asked Questions

What is CYBA?

CYBA (Conejo Youth Basketball Association) is a non-profit organization located in Thousand Oaks, California.  We provide a means of wholesome recreation to youths in the Conejo Valley area. All of our directors, coaches, and staff are volunteers.  About one thousand boys and girls in 1st through 8th play in the CYBA intramural winter leagues played throughout the year.

What are the different leagues that CYBA organizes?

CYBA offers 2 unique basketball seasons throughout the year:

  • Winter League – Registrations start August 1, practices start in November and Games take place from December through February.  This league is open to both boys and girls from 1st grade through High School and will be split into divisions based on grade levels with boys and girls playing separately.  1st and 2nd graders play on 8 foot rims.
  • Spring League – This is a league starting after Spring Break and finishing at the end of the school year, and is designed for boys and girls from 1st grade through High School.  Although games are refereed and scored, there are no playoffs and no all star games.  Practices are typically indoors, and players can choose to play with friends.  1st and 2nd graders play on 8 foot rims

How do I register?

You can register in one of 2 ways

  • Register online via www.cyba.org.  On the Home page you can create a user account and then sign up directly on the site
  • Print out the registration form located in our website, under league forms/ Winter League Registration, and send a check or money order to the address on the form

What is the registration fee?

The registration fee varies by season, registration period and is subject to change without notice. The Winter League cost is ~$225 with discounts for multi-player families.  The Spring League is ~$185.

Missing Sibling Discount

If you are registering multiple individuals, they all need to be registered at the same time in order to receive the sibling discount.

For instance, let's say that you register your daughter in the morning.  Then your son changes his mind that afternoon and decides that he wants to play.  If you go to register him, the discount will not show up.

There is no easy online resolution for this inconvenience.  To receive the discount, you will need to pay by check, the discounted amount.  You will also need to contact the league treasurer at treasurer@cyba.org to make arrangements.

You may mail the check to:

P.O. Box 6966

Thousand Oaks, CA  91359

What is the CYBA Refund Policy?

It is the policy of CYBA to honor all refund requests received prior to team assignments, less a 10% administrative fee.

Although it is the general policy of Youth Sports Organizations nationally not to allow refunds after the formation of teams, CYBA understands that dramatic situations occasionally occur. Therefore, refund requests received after the draft will be heard, but will require approval from the CYBA Board of Directors.  It may be possible to receive a discount of up to 50% after the draft.  Once games commence, a 0% refund is constituted.

Does CYBA encourage Academic Performance?

Yes, Academic Awards are given to each player who achieves a "B" average or above during the winter basketball season. There are College Scholarships available for graduating high school seniors.

When and where are the games and practices?

  • Games will be played indoors at Redwood Middle School, Colina Middle School, Los Cerritos Middle School and the Thousand Oaks Community Center
  • Each coach will set their own practice schedule.  Grades K-2 may have some designated practice time at the Thousand Oaks Community Center, though it is not guaranteed and subject to Conejo Valley Rec. program changes.  Grades 3-8 practice on weekdays outdoors.
  • CYBA has designated Redwood Middle School and Los Cerritos Middle School as official practice locations.  Alternative locations must be pre-approved and insured by the league.  Time and location are determined after teams have been assembled in October.  There is no guarantee that practices will be changed to accomodate every players schedule.  Refunds will not be issued because your designated practice time is inconvenient.
  • Winter Season:  All regular season games are on Saturday
  • Spring Season:  Games may be Friday night, Saturday or Sunday, depending on your grade

What are the Evaluations?

All players who register on time will be assigned a team.  The evaluations are used to try to ensure that teams are evenly balanced, and will include a quick evaluation of dribbling, running, shooting and a quick scrimmage.  All players who did not attend the previous Winter League must attend 1 of the evaluations.  Players not attending evaluations will be assigned to teams by the Division Directors.

How will the divisions and teams be formed?

Divisions will be formed based on grades, typically there will be a Division for each Boys grade, and Girls will be grouped into 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, and 7th and above.  For 1st and 2nd graders teams will be formed by parent request and by school.  For 3rd grades and up CYBA will conduct a draft to select teams.

How do I sign up to coach a team?

Parent volunteering is our key to success and we need and welcome coaches.  Please contact the Division Director on our website to enquire about coaching opportunities.  You will be asked to submit a background appliation.

Can I read the rules for each division?

Yes, the rules are posted online by selecting the link for League Forms.

Can my child be on the same team as a friend?

You can make a request on the registration form to play with a friend, but please keep in mind that there are no guarantees. We try very hard to honor the friend requests for 1st and 2nd grade divisions.

When will I know what team we’re on?

Following the team selection night and coaches' clinic, coaches will contact all players on their respective teams.  This is typically towards the latter part of October.

How do I let CYBA know we aren’t available for practice on certain days?

On the registration form you can note practice conflicts.  Coaches set their own practice schedules so if they know a player isn’t available on the days he/she wants to practice, then he/she won’t draft that player.  Alternatively, you can contact your Division Director to let them know of any special circumstances.

How do I sign up to be a referee or scorekeeper?

Referees and Scorekeepers are available to 9th grade students and older. Candidates will have a solid understanding of basketball and its rules.  Candidates will go through a thorough training program before the season begins.  For more information contact the Referee Director listed in the link for Board Members.

Do you offer player scholarships?

We do offer a limited number of player scholarships; however, in exchange, we ask for volunteer hours. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact our League President, George Cabrera.  president@cyba.org

How can I get more involved with CYBA?

Our league is 100% run by volunteers, and we are always looking for potential Board Members and suggestions.  Please contact our President George Cabrera, president@cyba.org for more information or ideas.
